The San Juan is a location in Shadow of the Tomb Raider it is a town that grew around the Mission of San Juan.

History[]

The Mission of San Juan was founded in the 16th century in Peru after Spanish missionaries in the region witnessed four solar eclipses over a period of less than two decades. The missionaries claimed that they experienced visions of St. John the Apostle during each eclipse at a certain site. After the fourth eclipse in 1543 AD, the missionaries were given permission by the Church to establish the Mission of San Juan, which was built in 1544.

In 1603, Order of Trinity agents Andres Lopez and Truylos Serrano, the sole survivors of an expedition to Paititi to obtain the Silver Box of Ix Chel, departed the hidden city with the Silver Box in hand. The corrupting influence of the Silver Box had caused both Lopez and Serrano to become deeply disillusioned with Trinity; Lopez decided to hide the Silver Box to ensure only a future "Chosen One" could find and make use of it, and gained the permission of the Paititian emperor to take it out of Paititi for this purpose. Lopez quickly took charge of the Mission of San Juan, attracting a following who were inspired by his preaching about the purity of a life of labor. Over the course of 1604, Lopez, who renamed himself "Angel de la Cruz", directed the expansion of the Mission and the addition of a library where the Silver Box would be concealed to await the Chosen One.

Numerous earthquakes brought on by the nearby active volcano wracked the region over the centuries, each time damaging the Mission and requiring extensive reconstruction. The latest such earthquake occurred in 2015, presumably as the third harbinger of The Cleansing, and damaged several of the Mission's buildings and a large statue in its courtyard. Lara Croft, Jonah Maiava, and Abigaile Ortiz arrived at the Mission in the earthquake's aftermath to search for the Silver Box of Ix Chel.
