The PlayStation was initially co-developed by Sony in collaboration with Nintendo who were planning on making a CD based add on for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. However the partnership fell apart and Nintendo instead partnered with Philips, which resulted in the CDi.
Sony initially considered partnering with SEGA in order to continue developing the CD add on continued development on the console independently.
The PlayStation launched in 1994, it became the most successful console of the fifth generation as well as the first home console to ship 100 million units.
Tomb Raider[]
Tomb Raider launched on PlayStation in October 1996, two weeks after it launched on the Sega Saturn. The game became an instant success. The next several Tomb Raider games would be released on PlayStation, with Tomb Raider II & III being exclusive to it on console (Though still available on PC)
