"Alexander found it using a map that was with the box, a map he then hid from the world. But the name he gave this map was "Mati""
―Lara[src]

Mati, as Alexander the Great named it, is the map leading to the Cradle of Life, that holds the Pandora's Box. Its dot markings are a code for deciphering the orb with sound. If the sound is played near Mati, it then reveals the location of the Cradle of Life through a projection. In Africa on the Mountain of God, the Mati is also used to open a way to Cradle of Life, and make the Shadow Guardians disappear.

History[]

326 BC in India, when Alexander the Great's army was ravaged by plague, they found the Pandora's Box. Alexander felt that the box was too powerful to be trusted to any man, so he returned it to its home, The Cradle of Life. Alexander hid the Mati to Luna Temple with the amulet, and had an amulet forged depicting the form in which the orb can be activated.

In 2003, Lara Croft found the Mati in the now sunken Luna Temple near Thira, but lost it immediately to Shay Ling leader Chen Lo. Chen Lo was hired by Jonathan Reiss to obtain it, but after seeing that Lara Croft is after it, Chen Lo realized its value and wanted to re-negotiate the price. Reiss then threatened Chen's family to make sure he gets Mati. Chen Lo sent his brother Xien Lo to Shanghai to hand over the orb to Reiss, but Lara Croft intervened and Xien was shot. Despite the trouble, Reiss now had the Mati and was attempting to decipher it in Hong Kong. Lara and Terry Sheridan infiltrated the lab and stole the orb before Reiis could figure out Cradle's location. Back at Croft Manor, Bryce had figured out that sound is the key, and sent the sound to Lara over the phone, activating the orb, the location of the Pandora's Box was revealed to be in Tanzania. Once Lara reached the Mountain of God, Reiss appeared and forced Lara to accompany him and Kosa up the mountain. To save Kosa, Lara used the Mati to open the way to the Cradle of Life.
