Malcolm Oliver is a character in the novel The Amulet of Power.
Biography[]
Malcolm Oliver took part in the Mau Mau Uprising in Kenya when he was a teenager. He stayed in Kenya, and lived his whole life there.
He had worked as a police in 1978, but when he arrested some politicians he was asked to take a leave of absence. It's been 25 years since, and he isn't officially fired, so technically he still is a police officer. He still makes arrests occasionally. Since he is police he has the license to carry his favorite .44 Magnum, even to foreign countries.
Today Malcolm is an older man, with white hair, wearing a khaki shirt and shorts. He has fallen into a habit of drinking coffee in the morning due to all the American clients of his.
Malcolm Oliver was contacted by Omar informing him that his old friend Lara Croft is coming to Kenya, and would like to meet up with him in the airport. When Lara had arrived and they were leaving the airport for the hotel, they stopped at The Carnivore to have a dinner. Lara used the opportunity to explain her situation.
The hotel they stayed at was the Norfolk hotel in Nairobi, where they were greeted with a black mamba in Lara's room. Malcolm rushed back to his room to grab his magnum, but Lara had already dispatched the snake with a knife. Malcolm decided to leave the hotel, and stop at his house for a rifle, but there they were greeted by a leopard, Lara managed to scare it away with a gun.
Malcolm thought they'd be safer in The Kentmere Club, where they spent the night. In the morning though Malcolm noticed Lara's fruit bowl had been poisoned when a bird who had snatched a grape from it died.
They once again left the hotel and Malcolm knew a good place to spend the day without any trouble. They stopped for a moment to buy food, and moved on to Aberdare Range. They spent several hours there, but Malcolm mentioned that they need to leave before dark, as the gates will be closed, and they would be trapped in for the night. When they left, Lara smelled oil. Malcolm checked under the hood and had Lara gun it, but everything seemed fine. Lara took the wheel, and while going downhill, they found out what the problem was, braked no longer worked. Lara managed to keep the rover on the road until the terrain leveled out and they could stop the car. They decided to spend the night at The Ark which was couple of miles away, so they walked the distance.
Malcolm managed to convince his friend that they need to spend the night as Lara was in danger. In the morning they were driving towards an airport, when a man hidden in their car revealed himself, ad forced them to drive into a park. He then sprayed them with animal blood, and waited for lions to attack them. They were interrupted by a rhino, and Malcolm taught Lara how to avoid rhino's charges. The lions did come and Lara used the rhino to scare them away. They were free to continue their travels.
They arrived at Wilson Airport, where they charted a plane from Milo Jacobi. They made a refueling pitstop in Mombasa, and moved on to Seychelles. While over the ocean Milo stopped the engines and revealed himself to be one of the assassins. Lara managed to kill him and took over the plane, and stop it from plummeting into the ocean.
In Seychelles they were greeted by Ibraham Mohammed el-Padir who was one of Omar's men. They planned on spending the night in the Beau Vallon Beach Resort, and go to Praslin Island the next day. Malcolm and Lara spent some time in a casino, but when they returned to the resort, they found Ibraham bleeding out. Ibraham before he died confessed on revealing their next destination to the Mahdists due to the torture.
On Praslin Island, Lara started to act weird and take the danger too lightly, which made Malcolm worried for her. After spending the night, Malcolm woke up to a message from Lara, which was an obvious lie. Lara revealed that she had duped the Mahdists to leave with a fake amulet, and everything is over. Now all that was left was to find the real Amulet of Mareish. Lara knew it was in Church of the Chevalier, but when they arrived they they couldn't find it. The suddenly it became visible just placed on the altar. Lara figured out the trap, and took the amulet. However the amulet's influence made Malcolm crazy. He shot Lara and when bullets didn't faze her, he went into fist fight. Malcolm was stopped by three sand creatures, the protectors of the amulet, and was torn from limb from limb. After Lara had destroyed the amulet, she buried Malcolm next to the chapel and used the chapels old cross to mark the grave.
