Lara was meant to find a horse on the island, and use it to ride around the island, the horse was able to jump larger gaps. She could even fight and pick up items while riding that horse.
In one sequence, Lara rode the horse down a mountain, evading a giant monster that chased her. She was eventually stopped by human sized creatures with bladed hands, causing the horse to slam against a tree. The horse was killed by those creatures, while Lara escaped by jumping down a chasm into water.
