Hayley Elizabeth Atwell (born 5 April 1982) is a British and American actress who voices Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft animated series.
Biography[]
Atwell trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, becoming friends with the likes of Jodie Whittaker and Michelle Dockery. She graduated in 2005, and began appearing in stage productions such as Prometheus Bound at London's Sound Theatre. She went on to perform with Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. She shortly began appearing in television series, including The Pillars of Earth with Eddie Redmayne, in which she received her first Golden Globe nomination. She has also been nominated for three Laurence Olivier Awards for her work in theatre.
Prior to her first appearance in the Tomb Raider franchise, Atwell was notable for playing Agent Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She first appeared as the character in Captain America: The First Avenger, then going on to play the character in a spin-off live action series, Agent Carter, which ran for two seasons. Atwell reprised her roles in future Marvel projects, such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D., Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, and Avengers Endgame - which once became the highest grossing film of all time. Aside from her work with Marvel, she has also appeared in popular films such as Cinderella (2015), Blinded by the Light, Christopher Robin and Mission: Impossible 7.
Tomb Raider[]
In 2013, Atwell was quoted by Australian newspaper The Age as saying: "There's… some kind of online campaign for me to do Tomb Raider Reborn [sic], which I know has just come out as a computer game. MGM have the rights to make it into a film, which would be fantastic to do because I'd get to spend a year of my life training hard and pick up all sorts of fantastic fun skills."[1] She also retweeted several fans on Twitter who wished to see her cast in the film that would eventually become the 2018 film starring Alicia Vikander.[2]
On September 13, 2021, it was announced that Atwell would voice Lara Croft in the anime sequel to Shadow of the Tomb Raider, replacing Camilla Luddington.[3] Showrunner Tasha Huo and Shelley Blond voiced their support for Atwell on Twitter.[4][5] On Instagram, Atwell stated: "It has been a real pleasure recording [Tomb Raider] for Netflix and Legendary. Written and executive produced by the brilliant Tasha Huo."[6]
