Charles Devereaux is a mercenary who lost his father to a group that calls itself The Light. With the help of the Peril Stones, he hopes to become strong enough to take revenge on this organization.
Biography[]
Charles Devereaux grew up in Paris as the son of a priest. As a child, he was a diligent and sociable student, and he greatly amazed his father, who opened his church to the homeless. One day, members of the Light approached Devereaux's father. They asked Charles to join the new order and make his church a base for The Light. Devereaux's father refused, preferring to care for other people rather than serve the fanatical ideals of The Light. Shortly afterward, Devereaux's father was murdered. From then on, Devereaux changed, wandered around, committed thefts and was imprisoned several times. Later, he joined the Foreign Legion and underwent their tough training. Later, he worked as a mercenary, always looking for ways to destroy the Light to avenge his father. At some point, he probably came across the legend of the Peril Stones, which would make him powerful enough to destroy the Light.[1]
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft[]
Charles Devereaux noticed the jade box on the brochure of the donation gala organized by Lara Croft and joined the event. During the speech, Devereaux broke into the back rooms. He was confronted by Lara herself, but he managed to get away with the box on a motorcycle. He reached the boat, and saw Lara at the dock, so he revealed who he was to her from safe distance.[2]
Devereaux quickly moved on to China, to retrieve the ruby box and the wrath stone. While en route he grabbed the Power Stone and tried its effect on the crew of the boat. Seeing that people under his control even kill if commanded, he was satisfied. At a fishing village he hired Hongru to lead him to the shrine of Emperor Tianxi Xing. But he found no Peril Stones there. He learned that Lara is in the region and decided to see what she is up to, he found her holding the ruby box. Lara tossed the box towards a river, but Devereaux managed to grab it but found the box to be empty. Devereaux also found Jonah Maiava nearby, and used the Power Stone to control him.[3]
Devereaux tracked Lara to Istanbul and confronted her with the empty box, he tried to convince her to let him finish his mission, by revealing what happened to his father. Lara, however, did not want to listen. Devereaux had Lara followed by mind-controlled people. After she had procured the Wrath Stone, he showed up in her hotel room, and forced Jonah to take it from her. Devereaux combined the Power and Wrath Stone right there, which caused an explosion offering him cover to move on.[4]
Devereaux's next target was the Betrayal Stone in Pasargadae, which he needed the other stones to reach. There were no hiccups in getting it. He departed Pasargadae on a train, but Lara had caught up with him. It was now Lara who tried to convince Devereaux to drop his quest. Devereaux, however, was determined to finish the Light. He then used the Wrath Stone part to make Jonah attack Lara. Lara managed to surprise Devereaux and knock the Peril Stones from him and releasing all the people he controlled. Devereaux managed to get the stones back back, but Lara and Jonah escaped.[1]
Devereaux had a head start on the Greed Stone, and reached it first. Lara again arrived and tried to convince him to stop. But when she saw no other choice, she tried to kill him. The combining of the stones prevented that, Devereaux sought out Lara after the blast, and dropped her off of a cliff.[5]
Now having all the stones, Devereaux went to the Azores to confront the Light. He tortured the men there, when he was attacked by Lara and the Interpol. During the fight, Devereaux absorbed the Peril Stones into himself transforming him into a supernatural beast. Lara used her ingenuity to attempt to separate the stones from him. Camilla Roth saw Lara's actions and joined her. Having lost two stones, and being weakened, Lara used electricity to finish off Devereaux and remove the last stones. Now back to his human self, Devereaux was arrested by the Interpol.[6]
